National Parks & Wildlife Service

The National Parks and Wildlife Service’s role is to secure the conservation of a representative range of ecosystems to maintain and enhance populations of flora and fauna in Ireland. They designate and advise on the protection of habitats and species identified for nature conservation. They also manage, maintain and develop State-owned National Parks and Nature Reserves and promote awareness of natural heritage and biodiversity issues through education, outreach to schools and engaging with stakeholders.

The Problem

The NPWS were in need of two pond-dipping platforms to be used for educational purposes. Our brief was to design and install the dipping platforms with the following specifications. The walkway had to be slip resistant, maintenance free, rot proof, splinter free and child friendly. As one of the lakes was man-made particular steps were to be taken so as not to put a hole in the Butyl which was in situ.

The Solution

We designed the platform with our design engineer. This was then approved by the NPWS team. The recycled plastic decking was chosen as it is slip resistant even when wet, maintenance free, durable, rot- proof and for its long life. The structure was installed and the necessary steps were taken to save the Butyl from being punctured. The platform fitted into the environment and most of all the materials used were child friendly and suitable for the intended purpose.
